The organizing committee of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) has completed their preliminary work and are about to commence activities for the fiscal year starting with the Novices Boxing tournament from Friday April 9-11 next.
The tournament is scheduled to be held at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue and is open to all gyms affiliated to the GABA. Boxers that have not fought in championships from the Intermediate category upwards are eligible to participate. Gyms can also enter any number of boxers in the different categories.
Those divisions being contested are; light/flyweight (105 lbs), flyweight (112 lbs), bantamweight (119) pounds, featherweight (125 lbs), lightweight (132 lbs), junior welterweight (141 lbs), welterweight(152 lbs), middleweight (165 lbs), light/heavyweight (178 lbs), heavyweight (201 lbs) and super/heavyweight (unlimited).
A document outlining the prerequisites of the tournament has been dispatched to the gyms and respective coaches and outlines the general requirements for participation.
The organizing committee adopted a different approach to tournaments and the respective gym administrators would be properly briefed of these in ample time before the commencement of tournaments.
Only gyms that have paid their affiliation dues would be eligible to participate.
