Dominica’s Club Champions Bath Estate is expected to touch down in Guyana today ahead of Group D action in the Caribbean Football Union Champions League Qualifying tournament which will kick on Wednesday at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground.
Guyana’s leading club, Alpha United is hosting this group which also involves Walking Boys of Suriname; they will arrive on Wednesday, overland.
Preparations for Alpha have been intense as they seek to get past the first round having not done so last year. Club President Odinga Lumumba is leaving no stones unturned and has engaged the services of six (6) Jamaican players to strengthen the Hammer ahead of the battle.
Based on the rules of the competition, only four foreign players are allowed, the final practice game for Alpha was played last evening at the GFC Ground where ‘The Hammer’ opposed a National select side. It was also the final chance the Jamaicans had of impressing the Technical staff.
The last Jamaican player, forward Kevin Deere of Portmore FC touched down in Guyana on Saturday evening, arriving before were Troylan Williams (forward) of Mountain View FC, Oneke Ford (forward) of Sporting Central and Leighton Murray (goalkeeper) of Arnette Gardens.
Peter Gordon (midfield) of Super League Club Santos and Jermaine Alleyne also a midfield player with Tivoli Gardens were here before but has already returned to their homeland.
With home advantage set to play a major role in the advancement of Alpha, the club is appealing to fans and supporters to come out in their numbers to cheer them on.
Alpha will open against Bath Estate on Wednesday at the GCC; Walking Boys of Suriname opposes Bath Estate on Friday with the final game of the group set for Sunday between Alpha and Walking Boys.
Bath Estate, like Alpha is aiming to get past the first round jinx having lost to Trinidad and Tobago’s W Connection, 0-5 and 1-12 last year.
The local side is expected to be formidable challengers this time around with preparations commencing back in January. Like the GDF, they were also hit by the change of dates twice before but remain focused for the task at hand.
Commenting on the preparedness of Alpha at a recent press conference, Captain Howard Lowe stated that they were mentally and physically prepared and were going through the final touches. He said he was confident that they will ease past the first round on this occasion.
