Long standing political activist and one of Guyana’s leading horticulturists, Boyo Ramsaroop, died at the Georgetown Hospital yesterday. He was 71years old. Ramsaroop leaves behind 50 years of political activism with the PPP. In the final four years of his life, he switched his support to the Alliance for Change, claiming that the present PPP leadership had departed from the tradition of Cheddi Jagan.
Ramsaroop was among the first batch of scholarship holders to communist Eastern Europe during the Premiership of Dr. Cheddi Jagan. Some notable colleagues of Ramsaroop included Brian Rodway of the WPA and GECOM’s chairman, Steve Surujballi. Ramsaroop pursued studies in electrical engineering and on his return to Guyana founded the East-German Friendship Society with his brother, PPP Parliamentarians EMG Wilson, Maacie Hamid and Freddie Kissoon among others. In the late seventies, he established with his wife, the company, Double B Gardens, which involved landscaping and floral arrangements.
Kaieteur News columnist, Freddie Kissoon, who knew him well, explained that he was a quiet unassuming man who proved to be one of the most loyal followers of Cheddi Jagan. But according to Kissoon, despite his unswerving fidelity to the PPP, he was capable of immense appreciation of the political viewpoints of others and this marked him apart from the rest of the early PPP cadres. Cremation arrangements are tentatively set for Sunday while facilities are being put in place to accommodate the arrival of three of his children and wife from Germany. His second son, Gerhard Ramsaroop of the AFC leadership who is based in Guyana, told Kaieteur News that there will be a week of wakes at his home in Alexander Village. The Kaieteur News extends its condolences to the Ramsarop family.
