Poor cricket mars final trial match
National under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll was the only real exception as ordinary cricket marred the final trail match to select the Georgetown for the Demerara Cricket Board Inter Association 50-over cricket competition which starts on Thursday.
Stoll took the first three wickets to finish with 3-14 while pacer Neil Barry Junior, despite his lack of genuine pace, bowled with good control and produced lateral movement to grab 3-12 as Delon Fernandes’ X1 fell for an embarrassing 68 all out replying to the 192-8 from 45 overs made by Dexter Solomon’s X1.
Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan top-scored with 18 and Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Esau made 14 in Fernandes’ X1 innings.
Left-arm spinner Dino Choo-Wee-Nam, who had problems with his length, took 2-13 as poor shot selection by the batsmen was the order of the day on a slow, two-paced Malteenoes pitch.
Earlier, Solomon’s X1 benefited from an unfinished 44-run 9th wicket partnership between Solomon and Carlos LaRose after Alex Romalho (32) threw his wicket away when seemingly set for a substantial score and Omesh Danram (24) and birthday boy Shaquelle Willaims (18) did likewise. Off-spinner Raphael Singh bowled well to finish with 2-29 from six overs and leg-spinner Amir Khan had 2-35 from nine while Nanan produced a tidy spell and looked the best of the spinners yesterday.
Off-spinner Ricardo Devers, who again struggled for control, took 2-36 from seven overs while national under-19 pacer Seon Daniels proved expensive with 2-44 from seven overs.
Solomon, whose general cricket (like most of thoes from the city who recently played at the national under-17 and under-15 levels) has gone backwards, finished unbeaten on 42 with 2 fours. Larose hit four fours in his undefeated 26 in a match in which all of the batsmen and many of the bowlers produced sub-standard performances. The GCA selectors have now reduced the training squad to 26 and will have practice sessions from 15:30hrs at the Malteenoes ground tomorrow and Tuesday.
The G/Town squad read:- Quincy Ovid Richardson, Shameer Fazal, Mohan Ramdeen, Alex Ramalho, Clevon Hyman, Kwame Crosse, Dayanand Roopnarine, Safraz Esau, Dexter Solomon, Shaquille Williams, Dillon Fernandes, Amir Khan, Raj Nanan, Andre Stoll, Seon Daniels, Omesh Dhanram, Neil Barry jnr., Kevin Ogle, Dino Chow-Wee-Nam, Christopher Surat, Raphael Singh and Stephan Singh, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Carlos Larose, Ricardo Devers, Jaron Bryon.
