The need for corporate support towards the success and development of local sports stalwarts cannot be underscored yet often times the response garnered from the corporate community has been lukewarm, negligible, or non-existent. Notwithstanding this, local sports administrators continue to plug away in the hope that the corporate entities would feel compelled to adhere to their moral responsibility to the sports community and render the relevant support.
Yesterday afternoon, Western Union and Bill Express demonstrated an understanding of the plight of the local sports community when Marketing Manager of the Western Union and Bill Express, Natheeah King presented checks, trophies and sports gears, valued at over three hundred and fifty thousand dollars, to three sports entities on behalf of her entity. Those lucky enough to have benefited from Western Union’s chivalry are the executive of the Hikers Union Hockey Club, the organizers of the Bartica Regatta Committee and those of the Rupununi Rodeo committee.
Members of the Hikers Union Hockey Club are scheduled to wing out for neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago to participate in a two prong tournament for players in the U-16 and U-21 categories.
They will be accompanied by coach, Jerazeno Bell and manager Michael Harding.
The Bartica Regatta Committee, represented by one of the organizers, Sonia Persaud, also received a sponsorship package from the money transfer agency to help offset their expenses.
Not to be left out, Treasurer of the Rupununi Rodeo Committee, Megan Thomas, also collected on behalf of her group. Activities in Rupununi are scheduled for April 3 and 4.
A proud Natheeah King presented the respective gifts to the representatives even as she reiterated her company’s commitment towards the development of local sports Associations/Federations and by extension, sports personalities.
“We have supported youth development in the past and will continue to render such support despite the challenges we face,” said Ms. King.
She noted that support rendered by her company is made possible through the support received by the public towards her organization. She then wished the organizers well in their quest to develop the talent of local sports personalities.
