Two ranks from the Kitty Police Station yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates Court charged with corrupt transaction.
One of them narrowly missed being remanded. His lawyer informed the court that he would be getting married today. The lawyer was also made to produce the wedding invitations.
Police Constable Boris Mitchell was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.
It is alleged that on March 9, last, he attempted to pervert the course of justice by misrepresenting the offence for which a man, Carl Jerrick, was arrested.
The court was told that Jerrick was arrested for possession of narcotics and was informed that the allegation can be reduced to loitering.
What may also have influenced the granting of bail was the fact that his bride is expecting triplets.
Bail was granted to the tune of $70,000 and Mitchell is expected to make his next court appearance on April 27.
Another policeman, Police Constable, Rajpaul Patokie, was charged with corrupt transaction on March 10. He allegedly took $30,000 from Carl Jerrick as an inducement for foregoing prosecution.
Like his colleague, he too pleaded not guilty.
He was represented by defense counsel Patrice Henry. Henry in his bail application told the court that Patokie poses no flight risk since he resides in the compound of the Ruimveldt Police Station and is still a serving member of the Guyana Police Force.
He added that his client is a father of two minors.
Police prosecutor Stephen Telford did not object to bail and bail was granted to the tune of $30,000. He will return to court on April 27.
Defence Counsel Patrice Henry told the court that Jerrick was arrested for possession of narcotics but nothing was found on him. He asked the court to release his client on his own recognizance since he is scheduled to be married later today. The accused wedding invitation was also tendered in court.
