Demerara Female team to be announced today
By Sean Devers
Yesterday’s Demerara Senior female cricket trial at the Police ground began in glorious sunshine and was later interrupted by a heavy shower just after 14:30hrs but not before June Ogle-Thomas and Shinead ‘Pinky’ Emerson had fashioned an unfinished 70-run seventh wicket partnership with confident batting.
The 23-year-old Thomas batted through the entire innings to finish 25 short of becoming the first female to score a century in a local match in Demerara while the pugnacious Emerson finished unbeaten on a shot-filled 39 as Devanie Sewnarine’s X1 reached 199-6 off their allotted 42 overs on a flat track.
Joann VanSertima’s X1 then slipped from 32-0 off five overs when rain stopped play to be restricted to 121-5 when the game ended in fading light.
Wicketkeeper Victoria Bacchus and Oneka Wallerson added 47 for the first wicket before Wallerson, who struck five fours in 33, was leg before to Latoya Smith. Bacchus continued to look good before eventually falling for a well constructed 58 with four fours.
However, nobody else apart from Mohamed (10) reached double figures as Lashauie Toussiant picked up 2-11.
The Demerara team to face Essequibo in the opening round of the Female senior Inter County competition which is scheduled to commence on Thursday, is expected to be announced today.
The compact right-handed Thomas, Guyana’s Wicketkeeper in the last regional Female tournament, struck 4 fours from 116 ball in her undefeated 75 and looked equally solid on both sides of the wicket as she opened the batting and her punches off the back foot through extra cover was a joy to watch.
Watched by a small but vocal crowd which included her husband and two-year-old daughter, Thomas was joined by Emerson when National Female Skipper Zaheeda Samdally (5) was stumped off Akazie Thomas at 129-6 and the pair remained unbeaten when the overs expired. Emerson celebrated her 18th birthday with an array of powerful shots and her undefeated 39 from 27 balls included two fours and an effortless straight six off medium pacer Haseena Mohamed.
Thomas’ only chance was offered when she was on 54 off the bowling of Mohamed but apart from Thomas and Emerson, only Nalini Sumentra (12) and Toussiant (11) of the other batters reached double figures as Tracy Glasgow took 2-17.
