– But Coach, Wilson believes they will win
By Edison Jefford
Head Coach of the Inter-Guiana Games’ (IGG) male football team, Joseph Wilson thinks that the composition this year is capable of doing much better than finishing at the bottom but expressed a concern over the team’s general fitness.
“We cannot build a mountain in such a short space of time. I’m going to transform all the negatives into positives though,” Wilson told Kaieteur Sport at one of the team’s practice sessions yesterday at the National Gymnasium.
Guyana finished at the bottom of the tri-nation IGG in male football last year and while it appears as though, fitness is a problem, the coach believes that there are some other areas that can compensate for the absence of optimum fitness.
“Fitness appears to be a concern but there is enthusiasm, skill, experience, knowledge and things like that.
WARMING UP!!! Part of the IGG Football Team is caught warming up at the National Gymnasium before a Beep Test yesterday afternoon.
Fear of failure depends on how you take it as a coach. We could win with this team, it is just that fitness is a concern,” Wilson admitted.
“Basically, I planned a Beep Test this afternoon (yesterday) because last week when there was one (Beep Test), a lot of them (the players) failed. I gave them some work to do and we are going to see what happens,” he continued.
Wilson said that there will be a practice game this afternoon at Conquerors Ground with the aim of assessing the team tactically. He indicated that he wants to see them in a game situation before they depart for French Guiana next week.
The football team only came together last week and while there are about four players on it from last year’s squad, Wilson is of the view that each of the players can hold their own after they were exposed to football at the U-15 and U-17 levels.
“My intention is to have no physical training session in French Guiana. We will be doing a lot of board work and other simulations because remember we can’t overdo it,” Wilson told this newspaper before turning to yesterday’s session.
French Guiana will host the Guiana Games from March 25-29 with football being one of four disciplines.
The others are Track and Field, Swimming and Chess. The teams are to depart on the 24 for French Guiana through Suriname.
