– denies opening fire at lawmen
A 19-year-old man who was shot by the police on Wednesday night near the Mandela Avenue Texaco Service Station, has denied that he was firing at the ranks when he was wounded.
Police said that Akeem Rose, of North East La Penitence, was shot in the left hip and groin when he and an accomplice opened fire at a police patrol while sitting in a car.
A release gave the wounded man’s age as 17.
But Rose, who said he is 19, claims he was shot by the occupants of a black car and that he was unarmed at the time.
A police release stated that ranks were on patrol at around 23:00 hrs on Wednesday when they saw two men in a car that was parked in the compound of the Mandela Avenue Texaco Service Station.
Kaieteur News was told that two Tactical Services Unit ranks were approaching the vehicle when they came under gunfire.
Police sources said that the policemen discharged seven rounds at the gunmen, who fled north along Mandela Avenue before running into North East La Penitence.
However, they said one of the fleeing men, identified as Akeem Rose, of North East La Penitence, collapsed in a clump of bushes.
Police said that they recovered an unlicensed .38 revolver with five rounds and a spent shell from the suspect.
He has been admitted under police guard at the Georgetown Police Station.
Speaking to Kaieteur News from his hospital bed, Rose claimed that he is employed at a Sheriff Street establishment and that the incident occurred shortly after he and a friend had left work
Rose claimed that he and the friend had travelled by taxi to the Mandela Avenue Service Station, where he purchased a loaf of bread.
The youth claimed that he and his friend were returning to the taxi when the occupants of a black car opened fire at them and wounded him in the process. Rose said that he collapsed in a gutter near the Church of the Transfiguration, while his friend fled the scene.
He was then taken to the GPHC by police ranks.
The young man’s mother told Kaieteur News that she was at her North East La Penitence residence when she heard several gunshots. The woman said that she remained in her bed, but shortly after, someone informed her that they believed that her son was one of the victims.
She then went to the GPHC where she saw her son in the Emergency Unit, being treated for gunshot wounds.
