– allegedly attacked cop with knife
A 35-year-old larceny suspect was shot in the back during an altercation with a police rank at the Sparendaam Police Station at around 17: 30 hrs yesterday.
Police said that the suspect, identified as Dexter Beveney, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, had attacked a CID rank with a knife when he was shot. Police sources said that Beveney had previous convictions for burglary and a release confirmed that he had been recently released from prison.
According to the release, police had arrested the suspect following investigations into a burglary on Wednesday night at the home of Mark Carter, of Atlantic Gardens, ECD.
The release said that acting on information, police yesterday went to a house at Prince William Street, Plaisance, where some of the stolen household articles and curtains were recovered.
“As a consequence, Dexter Beveney, who was recently released from prison after serving a sentence for burglary, was arrested,” the release said. “In an effort to escape, Beveney attacked the plain-clothes policeman with a knife which caused him to resort to the use of force and discharge a round from his service firearm which struck Beveney to his lower back.”
The suspect has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
