The third accused in the case of the sexual assault of three little girls from Logwood, Enmore, Carlos Munroe, secured his pre trial liberty yesterday when Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus granted him bail in the sum of $150,000.
The matter was called up at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court where the two other defendants, Shamraj Cyril and Maywalall Samaroo also were also present.
Initially, the trio was refused bail when they made their first court appearance February 19.
Cyril, who is wheelchair-bound, and Samaroo, managed to secure bail when their attorney approached the High Court a few days later.
The men are accused of having carnal knowledge of three young sisters between December 25, 2008 and July 2009.
Yesterday, Police Prosecutor Inspector Lloyd Thomas objected to Munroe being granted bail, citing the nature of the offence.
However, Magistrate Isaacs- Marcus indicated that she was inclined to grant the accused bail since she had already set a long date, July 14, for the next hearing.
She indicated that since the file on the matter had to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further advice, the prosecution was in no position to commence the matter in a timely manner.
She ordered that Munroe report to the Cove and John Police Station at 7am every Saturday.
The shocking revelations of the three sexually molested sisters, ages 9, 8 and 7-year-old earlier this year had initially led to the arrest of five men from the village of Logwood, Enmore and bad blood between the victims’ parents and their neighbours.
The three sisters who were hospitalized at the West Demerara Hospital had fingered several males in the Enmore community of sexually molesting them, causing them significant physical damage.
So severe are the physical damage that a doctor had described them as devastating.
The children were removed from their Enmore home last July by their aunt Maureen and taken to her home on the West Coast of Demerara.
However, their condition was only discovered in February by chance.
The children’s parents are known alcoholics, and there are reports that the children are left unattended and hungry for many days.
From time to time they would rely on good-natured neighbours for a meal.
The children’s aunt had related that on February 9, this year, she received some information that her nine-year-old niece was seen in a compromising position with a male student at her school on West Coast Demerara.
Upon questioning the child she realized that she was being evasive.
However after intense questioning, the children told episodes of being sexually molested by neighbours who are grown men with wives.
So shocking were the revelations that the following day their aunt contacted the Ministry of Human Services and provided them with the details.
The children were interview by the Ministry’s official and they repeated the names of the alleged predators.
The police were subsequently called into the matter and the children were sent for a medical examination.
The children’s parents were subsequently contacted by officials from the Human Services Ministry and they were also questioned by the police.
The children’s father said he was unaware of their plight until his sister made the disclosure to him.
He said before they were taken to the West Demerara he would normally leave his children at home while he and his wife went to work.
He said that he is aware that the neighbours would call his children over and give them food after inducing them with small amounts of cash.
He said that he never suspected that his children were being molested since they showed no signs of discomfort when they were living in Enmore with him.
“You see, the children they never come and tell me nothing because they know that me is a serious father. They never come and tell we nothing so we didn’t know wha going on,” the children’s father had told Kaieteur News.
He denied making up the story, claiming that it was his children who revealed the names of the members in the community who had molested them.
Yesterday, several neighbours turned up at the court to offer support to the three accused who they say are innocent.
As soon as the bail was announced for Munroe, the neighbours were observed counting out the cash in a convincing show of support for the accused.
