The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport launched the first 2010 collection of postage stamps in commemoration of Guyana’s 40th anniversary as a Republic.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, under whose responsibility the Corporation falls, said that the stamps are representative of the struggles that Guyanese have faced and risen above during the period of colonialisation. He added that the stamps mark a turning point in the history of Guyana.
“Forty years is a good time to recognise that each of us is responsible for the quality of life we live,” the Prime Minister posited. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony who was very instrumental in the production of the stamps, lauded the GPOC for taking such a commendable initiative. He said that stamps play an important role in showcasing Guyana’s rich culture, not just for revenue purposes.
“The Post Office has been doing a remarkable job in keeping the tradition of stamps alive, thereby playing their part in national development,” Minister Anthony said.
He urged all Guyanese to purchase the stamps, which he referred to as “little pieces of history.”
Chairman of the Board of Directors, GPOC, Bishop Juan Edghill in his remarks also shared the view that the production of the stamps is an attempt to preserve Guyana’s rich history.
However, he asserted that “the Post Office is not only about stamps, it is also a communication business that keeps people connected.” The chairman made an appeal for more partnership between the GPOC and communities in order that the Corporation can continue serving Guyanese as efficiently as possible.
The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) will also be producing some stamps, which will be designed by children.
In 2008, the GPOC launched a special commemorative stamp for CARIFESTA X as part of its contribution to the festival’s philatelic arts. Additionally, four limited edition stamps were produced in 2009 to show the contradicting presence of change and constancy between two countries that Guyana has shared friendly bilateral relations with, as well as a special Commonwealth stamp at the request of the Commonwealth Secretariat.
