Confident of excelling on debut
By Franklin Wilson
In this final sneak preview into the workout thoughts of Guyana’s competitors for the 4th Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) and Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships at Princess Hotel which lifts off tomorrow, Kaieteur News spoke with the final four athletes based in the Ancient County of Berbice.
As a matter of fact, seven (7) of the sixteen (16) athletes comprising Team Guyana are from the Ancient County, one (1) from Essequibo and the others from the Capital City, Georgetown.
Speaking on behalf of junior sensation 18-year-old
Vijai Rahim, Kelvin Lewis and Bhojkumar Jagnarine, Farouk Abdool said he was pleased to disclose that plans and preparations went well for them in the lead up to what will be their respective debuts at this level.
The quartet trains out of the Hardcore Barbell Club situated on the West Coast of Berbice and have been preparing ever since December of 2009.
“Things have gone well for us I must confess; we are all in excellent shape and ready to take on the competition that will be here. All the guys have been working hard and have stepped up to accordingly during the hectic 16 weeks training schedule regimen.”
Rahim (56.0kg class) the 2009 National Sub-Junior/Junior and Open Champion in this category is eying a record performance at this championship. Rahim will be aiming to break the World Sub-Junior Deadlift record. Tariq Immamdeen will also compete in the Sub-Junior division.
Abdool will compete in the 110kg class (Men Masters 1categroy); he was the champion of this category in 2008 and is expected to give reigning local champion Richard Mark Seymour and the other competitor’s stiff opposition.
Kelvin Lewis, the current 67.5kg National and Open King is promising that whoever comes in his way will be blown away.
Like Abdool and ‘Big’ John Edwards, Bhojkumar Jagnarine (82.5kg) will also participate in the Men Masters 1 category. He won this weight class at the 2008 National Championships and with the level of training he has been undergoing is expected to roll heads with his performances come Friday and Saturday at Princess Hotel.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Team Guyana Head Coach Wendell ‘Big Mac’ McPherson expressed his satisfaction with the level of preparation the athletes have gone through over the past months.
He noted that it is time for the guys to perform at their best to make themselves and all Guyana proud with what he expects to be great performances.
Ever since Guyana’s return to Caribbean, Regional and International competition after a hiatus of some 12 years, the athletes, mainly ‘Big’ John Edwards and Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses have been whipping their competition and has created names for themselves and Guyana in the Powerlifting circles.
This duo was joined last year by the phenomenal Randolph Morgan who in his debut year battered the opposition into submission to win the 82.5kg category and Overall Best Lifter at the 3rd Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) and Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships held in the US Virgin Islands.
The only other lifter on the team with Caribbean, Regional and International experience is Winston Stoby (75.0kg) who will be taking on the opposition in the Men Masters 11 category along with fellow Guyanese Errol ‘Big Man’ Henry (90.0kg) and Edwin Gordon Spencer (90.0kg).
Motivation will not be lacking at all for the Guyanese athletes this weekend and the entire public is urged to be at the Princess Hotel to rally around and support the Guyanese athletes. Admission on both days, Friday and Saturday is $500.
