– Gafoor’s, Two Brothers targeted on East Bank
The Ministry of Public Works and Communications has announced that 20 illegal structures on the East Coast Demerara are slated to be demolished within a month.
On East Bank Demerara, some big structures that will be demolished soon include a roof belonging to Gafoors at Land of Canaan, and the Two Brothers Gas Station’s 60-foot canteen which in on state drainage reserves, also at Land of Canaan.
It is all part of an aggressive demolition campaign that has seen Government ridding state reserves of encumbrances which is proving hazardous to traffic safety.
The Ministry’s Maintenance Engineer, Philip Bryan, during an interview with GINA, noted that progress of the campaign could be measured by various factors namely sensitisation and recurrences.
Bryan emphasised that more persons are becoming aware of the campaign, the reasons for it and the negative effects such as vehicular accidents that occur with encumbrances on the roadways.
In addition, there is a marked reduction in the erection of structures on Government’s reserves. The cycle of rebuilding structures has also minimized. Bryan noted that this is significant, since in the past after demolishing structures persons would have reconstructed them within a matter of days or even the next day.
Much progress has been made on the East Bank, East Coast, and West Coast Demerara. However, there is still some work to be done in all three districts, he said.
There are currently 20 structures on East Coast Demerara that will be demolished in less than a month, Bryan stated.
He said that the Ministry will be approaching the demolition of the structures in a systematic manner focusing first on eight wooden structures and then on 12 metal structures.
Demolition was done on the West Coast Demerara but some works remain incomplete since several structures had electrical installations and these have to be removed. Bryan noted that the campaign will revisit the area to ensure that the encumbrances are removed.
The demolition campaign is currently being expedited in New Amsterdam, Rose Hall and Canje, Berbice, Region Six.
The Ministry is working towards removing persons from within the one-mile radius of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. Commercial squatters close to the airport will be moved, and to facilitate this process Government will be placing them adjacent to the airport’s maintenance shop.
The Ministry is in the designing and planning stage of the removal of the commercial squatters. The design of a suitable cubicle for vendors is in progress and a model of what the area would look like is also in progress.
