National Table Tennis Coach, Linden Johnson says that preparation for Caribbean Table Tennis’ Pre-Cadets, Cadets and Junior Championships in Utuado, Puerto Rico is entering the tactical phase as it winds down at the Sports Hall.
The high-profiled event, which will feature more than eight countries from the region, is scheduled for March 27-April 8 with the Cadets competition set for March 27-April 2 and the junior Championships from April 2-April 8 respectively.
“Preparations are on stream. We’re training as a team at the moment. We’re just focusing on more tactical aspects coming down to bottom,” Johnson told Kaieteur Sport yesterday when contacted for comment on the team’s preparations.
The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) had encamped a squad for training over a period of weeks leading up to the event and selected the final team last week. The GTTA had also employed the services of all its Level I Coaches.
Senior national player, Christopher Franklin and General Secretary, Godfrey Munroe are among two of the coaches that were helping to prepare the teams. “We’re preparing them mentally, physically and tactically,” Johnson further indicated.
“We have to look at them closely now. I could give a good account for them. They have all been working very hard over the period of time,” he continued, adding that Guyana is in with a good chance of topping all the categories.
The National Table Tennis Coach believes that a lot will depend on players such as Nigel Bryan, Ambrose Thomas, Chelsea Edghill and some of the other seasoned campaigners at regional and international table tennis competitions.
