Seventy three-year-old grandmother Budia (only name), called ‘Dodo Gal’ of Warren Village, East Coast Berbice, who was the star witnesses in the murder trial of West Berbice resident Seenarine Ramnarine, who is charged with the murder of schoolgirl, Roshnie Pertab Singh, called, Indira, of Warren Village, was on Monday charged with ‘attempting to defeat the course of justice’. This is after she continued to give conflicting evidence to what she gave in her statement, even after being warned.
The woman appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo and was granted bail in the sum of $15,000. Budia, at whose house the victim was alleged to have been murdered, is alleged to have changed her story when in the witness box from the statement she gave to the police. Earlier the woman was deemed a hostile witness and was ordered arrested by the police. A file was prepared and sent to the office of the DPP for advice.
Roshnie Pertab Singh, who was a student of the Berbice Educational Institute at the time, would usually sleep at Budia’s house to keep the woman’s company.
The Prosecution is contending that between, June 6 and June 7, 2006, at Budia’s house at Warren Village, East Coast Berbice, Ramnarine raped and murdered Singh. The victim, who was also a Sunday School Teacher, was at the time in the process of writing her CSEC exams.
Attorney at law, Michael Sommersaul, is representing Ramnarine. The matter, which is still in the preliminary stage, has seen a number of twists. Budia is being represented by Attorney at Law Mursaline Baccchus.
Another witness in the matter Narindai Gobin was also ordered arrested after she changed her story from what she gave to the police in her statement after the incident.
In that statement, she had indicated that she identified the body of the deceased and witnessed the post mortem examination at the New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary. In court she changed her story drastically, stating that she could not remember what took place on the day. She too was arrested and an investigation ordered.
Magistrate Chandra Sohan is conducting the Preliminary inquiry into that matter.
