The Bernice Mansell Foundation of 73 Public Road, Houston, East Bank Demerara, in collaboration with Guyana Ottawa Cultural Association Inc. (Canada), yesterday provided a four-year scholarship to Akesi Cave, 12, who attends St Stanislaus College.
According to Bernice Mansell, the aim of the scholarship is to encourage academic excellence. Young Guyanese students, whether male or female, who would not be able to attend secondary school because of financial constraints are automatically qualified for the scholarship.
The value of the scholarship to Cave is C’dn$1,600 and will be spread over four years.
It will be disbursed in two equal installments of $200 in September and January, the first of which was disbursed last September.
Bernice Mansell disclosed should the recipient not complete a school year, the scholarship funding will be discontinued. A yearly progress report is needed of the student that includes classes completed and grades must be submitted to the Guyana Ottawa Cultural Association Inc. (Canada) at the end of the school year to continue receiving funding for the next school year.
She added that the association has established basic criteria which are followed when a student is being selected for the scholarship.
According to Cave, he is happy to receive the scholarship and is planning to develop his life and hope to have a job in Canada one day.
