The second day of action in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Super League competition sponsored by FIFA under the Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF Project saw a number of upsets and close contests.
Leading the upset episodes were home team Liquid Gold who turned in a solid performance against visitors Bakewell Topp XX whom they hammered 3-0 at the Bartica Community Centre ground.
Also suffering a stunning defeat was Sunburst Camptown at the hands of Buxton United by the odd goal in three playing at the Enmore Community Centre ground. The other game at this venue on the East Coast of Demerara saw defending Champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United squeezing past a solid Victoria Kings 3-2.
Over at the Wales Community Centre ground on the West Bank of Demerara, Milerock needled host team Seawall United.
Topp XX were able to hold off the challenges of a determined Liquid Gold outfit in the first half but were no match for the host team in the final 45 minutes. The Linden outfit had their fair share of chances in the opening stanza but failed to make them count. Their lack of finishing came back to haunt them in the second half, and to compound matters, Keron Cameron was sent off after attracting his second yellow card in the 82nd minute; the first was issued by Referee Steve James in the 14th minute.
Leon Canterbury netted a double for Liquid Gold in the 62nd and 69th minute while the other was converted by Mark Richards in the 78th minute. The home team missed a multiplicity of chances in the second half.
At the Wales Community Centre Ground, a defensive error handed Milerock full points against Seawall, late in the second half of an otherwise keen battle.
At Enmore Ground, Buxton United’s leading forward Clive Andries, who also played cricket for Guyana at the Under-19 level proved his worth yet again when he sent Buxton into the lead on the stroke of half time (45th minute).
The Buxton side doubled the lead in the 78th minute through a Robin Phillips goal heaping more pressure of Camptown. The City side was able to pull one back through a Lance Ralston goal 2 minutes before regulation time had elapsed. But it was too little, too late for them to have engineered a comeback of any sorts. It was Buxton’s second win in as many matches.
The other game at this venue almost proved to be a nightmare for the defending champions Alpha United who had to dig deep to stave off the intense challenges of Victoria Kings, the final score line, Alpha 3, Victoria Kings 2.
The Kings took the lead in the 36th minute when Sean Robinson blasted a well taken shot past goalkeeper Ronson Williams. The Kings had the opportunity of doubling the lead early in the second half but Winston Pompey missed a clear cut chance when he put the ball over the bar with the keeper already beaten.
Alpha’s Dwain Jacobs netted the first of his double in the 56th minute to even the scores for the defending champs. But Robinson, who also netted a brace of goals, pushed Victoria back into the lead in the 69th minute. Shawn Bishop leveled the scores for Alpha 8 minutes later while Jacobs sealed the win for Alpha in the 77th minute.
At the GFC ground in the City, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Rosignol United battled to a 1-1 draw. The West Coast Berbice based Rosignol battled back from a goal down to equalize via the penalty spot in the 70th minute, compliments of Clifford Campbell.
The result for Rosignol would have been positive given the fact that they were reduced to 10 players also in the 70th minute when Cornel Taylor was issued his second yellow card.
GDF had taken the lead 3 minutes earlier when their Captain Warren Gilkes converted but that advantage was soon cancelled out by the Berbicians. The Army side were also reduced to 10 players when Telson McKinnon was sent off for violent conduct in the 90th minute.
In the preceding game at the GFC, the GFF Under-17 Inter Association competition, East Bank and Berbice battled to a 1-1 tie.
