On Saturday evening last, the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown celebrated a quarter century of friendship and service to communities. At a Dinner and Dance held at the Red Cross Headquarters in Kingston, the members of the club gathered to recount their history, honour members and persons who have made notable contributions to their work and to celebrate the achievements of the club over those twenty five years.
Two very special guests were Mr. Harold B. Davis and his wife Mrs. Mayleen Davis who have played pivotal roles in the birth and life of the club. Inner Wheel Clubs are not new to the social landscape of volunteer and community service organisations.
Founding President Mrs. Mayleen Davis with her husband, Mr. Harold Davis and current president of the club, Mrs. Dorothy Fraser.
They are sponsored by the Rotary Club of their district and entail a membership base made up of the wives of the members of the Rotary Club. Though started in 1984 on March 16th 1985, the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown was chartered by the then President of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, Mr. Davis. Sixteen wives of the current members at that time then stepped forward to answer the call, and his wife Mrs. Davis was duly elected President of the Inner Wheelers of Georgetown.
Over the years the club has been involved in numerous charitable and community service oriented activities, from school feeding programmes to rehabilitation of homes for special groups and playgrounds. Activities of note are their scholarship programmes that support students from the hinterland while they pursue training for jobs as teachers and nurses or other important professions on the condition that the beneficiaries return to their communities and give back as they have so generously received.
They make annual provisions for monies to be donated to the Eccles Nursery School and have done so since the club’s inception 25 years ago. The annual Garden Party and Hat Show held at the Promenade Gardens is the club’s baby and has become more than just a fundraiser for the ladies, but a local entertainment fixture.
Current President of the Club, Mrs. Dorothy Fraser, pointed out that the club has done well in the last 25 years and the ladies have acquitted themselves well with regards to living by their motto of friendship and service to the community. She pointed out that recently they have had fundraisers for varied causes such as Breast and Cervical Cancer, Survivors of the Haiti Disaster, and the members even brought out friends and family in an effort to donate at least 25 pints of blood to the National Blood Bank in commemoration of their 25 years of continued existence.
