– suspects released on bail as police lament lack of forensic capabilities
The police have been ordered by the Director of Public Prosecutions to conduct further investigations into the death of 42-year-old Jairool Rohoman called ‘Chico ’ whose gagged, bound and bruised body was fished out of the Canje River on Tuesday Morning.
The police had sought further legal advice after the Post Mortem examination conducted by Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan on Wednesday last at the New Amsterdam Hospital proved inconclusive.
The Doctor had concluded that due to the decomposed state of the body, he could not pronounce on a definite cause of death.
Rohoman of Betsy Ground, East Canje and a weeder attached to the Rose Hall Estate went missing two Sundays ago after she left to visit the father of her child at his home in the neighbouring village of Gangaram on a request made by him.
The woman had moved out of the man’s home about three months ago, but would visit him from time to time. Her reputed husband Megnauth was keen to have her back and had threatened to do whatever it took to fulfill his desire.
The woman, after moving out of the home had started a relationship with someone else.
At the time of her death, she was living with two of her four children at Betsy Ground in a small house which was loaned to her by a friend.
When she was found floating in the river, her head was partly shaven and a piece of canvas rope was used to bind her hands and her head in a crouch position. Parts of her body were badly bruised. Her pants were missing, while she had on the same blouse that she left home with.
The police have since released the two men who were in custody on station bail and they are to make regular checks with the law enforcement authorities. The woman’s reputed husband and a male associate of her were picked up and being grilled on her murder.
They had both denied knowledge of her demise. The male friend had stated that he last saw her early on Sunday morning. Her reputed husband Megnauth was picked up at the site where the body was found after he turned up there.
Cops had visited the home of the reputed husband on the day she was found and had unearthed several pieces of evidence at the man’s home, including her pants which she left home with, a piece of canvas similar to the one used to bind her body and several umbrellas including one which she allegedly left home with. Several witnesses were questioned, including some who said that they saw the couple on a bicycle riding in the village earlier in the day.
Investigations are continuing and the cops have expressed optimism that they will crack this case. However, they have expressed some disgust at the non availability of more forensic equipment which will definitely pin someone to the crime.
