Entries will be closed on March 27 for the much anticipated Port Mourant Turf Club Grand annual one day Easter Sunday race meet slated for Sunday April 4 at the Club’s track at Port Mourant, Corentyne Berbice.
With just over three weeks remaining before race day, entries are filling up at a rapid pace. Already over 50 of the countries top racehorses have taken entry in what is expect to be biggest meet for the year so far.
The Port Mourant Turf club, which is one of the oldest in the country, is a usual sea of colours on Easter Sunday and the authorities are leaving nothing to chance as the up their preparations for the big race meet which has over $3.2M dollars at stake which will include cash, trophies.
Already Beverage giants Banks DIH limited and Digicel, two of the leading sponsors of horseracing in Guyana have indicted their willingness to be a part of the days programme with a few more entities expected to do so shortly.
Seven races are billed to be contested on the day with three main events set to highlight the programme. The B and Lower race, which will see the animals galloping just over a mile, will see the winner set to receive half a million dollars, plus a trophy. Those taking part in the 3-yrs-old open showdown over six and a half Furlongs has a tantalizing $350,000 to aim for. While the animals competing in the E class race will look to cash in on the $260,000 winners take.
The ‘G class 5 Furlongs event will see the winner receiving $160,000. There is $150,000 available for the winner of the ‘I’ and Lower event which covers a distance of six and a half Furlongs. The division one race, like the ‘I’ and lower -3 yr old non winner’s race, fetches a winning purse of $120,000 each and will both be six and a half Furlongs events.
The day’s event will be run under the auspices of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority as such owners, grooms and trainers are asked to get their animals properly registered before race day.
Those animals that are not properly registered will not be allowed to participate in the day’s proceedings. Jockeys are also being reminded that they too must be properly registered with the GHRA or they will not be allowed to participate in the race meet. Any one found contravening any of the rules will be penalized accordingly.
