A 46-year-old woman was yesterday granted bail on a charge of stealing from her employer and for fraudulent conversion.
The woman, Rihana Hussain, of Diamond Housing Scheme appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It is alleged that on February 13, last, Hussain was entrusted with a gold chain worth $27,000 by her employer, Naimoon Ali, to see and return proceeds to same Ali.
The charge stated that Hussain sold the chain but converted the money to her own use. To that charge she pleaded not guilty.
The second charge read that on Thursday March 11, Hussain stole $13,000 in cash from the same Naimoon Ali. The accused also pleaded not guilty to that charge. She then asked the court if she could explain and proceeded to state that a few weeks back Mrs. Ali came with a blank sheet of paper and asked her to sign on it.
“When I ask she wha ah signing fuh she tell me that is fuh me collect me salary,” Hussain said. She added that on March 11, her employer told her that some money from the house was missing.
“She tell me that $15,000 missing from de house and I was de only one in de house, so she strip search me and she find $7,000 dat ah had in meh brassier because I had to go pay courts,” the woman explained.
Hussain said it was only when she was at the police station yesterday that her employer turned up with the paper which had her signature and writing which stated that she was given the gold chain to sell and would return the money.
Then it was turn for the Virtual Complainant to address the court.
Mrs. Ali told the court that on March 11, she left to run an errand on the road and when she returned, upon checking her money she noticed $15,000 missing. The woman said she confronted Hussain who denied removing the money. Mrs Ali said she proceeded to search Hussain and found only $7000 hidden in the woman’s brassiere. She said she called in the police and hence the charges were laid.
After listening to both sides the Magistrate then placed Hussain on $30,000 bail for the fraudulent conversion and $20,000 bail for the other charge.
The matter had been put down until April 22.
