An official of an East Bank Demerara private school has apologised after being accused of head butting a Grade One student.
The school official was also accused of beating the student on his knuckles causing bruises.
Yesterday, the Principal of the private school at Grove held a confrontation with the official, the student and his mother where the “butting” accusation was denied. However, the official admitted to spanking the student.
Kaieteur News was told that on Wednesday, the student told another student that he does not “like black people”. That student reportedly started crying and was seen with the tears on his face by the official.
The official, after hearing what caused the incident, reportedly use a cane to spank the accused student. The teenager reportedly left the school and complained to his mother.
The Principal of the private school admitted to Kaieteur News that he had received a report of the incident and during the confrontation yesterday, the official admitted to administering “corporal punishment” on the student but denied butting him on the head.
He apologised and promised to contact the parent should there be complaints. According to the Principal, the Ministry of Education allows a moderate degree of corporal punishment to be meted out to students.
