Mars, Moses and Seymour winding down at Buddies Gym
By Franklin Wilson
With less than a week to go before the start of the 4th Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships at Princess Hotel, March 18-20, local athletes are winding down preparations.
Kaieteur Sport visited Kingsrow Barbell club earlier this week and caught up with John Edwards, Winston Stoby, Ryan Williams, Gordon Spencer and Errol Henry who have all expressed confidence in doing well at the upcoming championships.
Yesterday, we visited Buddies Gym located on Sheriff Street to catch a glimpse of Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses, Richard Mark Seymour and Karel Mars, the athletes working out there.
Mars, who will be contesting the 100kg weight class and is the reigning 2009 National Open champion, said that training has gone well so far and he is positive that he will give a good account of himself against opposition expected from six countries; United States, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and the United States Virgin Islands.
Mars also stated that he is anxious to do his bit to ensure that Guyana not only shines on an individual basis, but that they also win the Team Championship Title.
Mervin Moses, aka ‘Spongy’ has been competing for Guyana with great success at the Caribbean, Regional and International levels and is aiming to maintain that status despite suffering a back injury two Friday’s ago.
“Despite the injury which is on the mend, I am hoping to do well once again in front of my home fans. I tore some muscles attempting to squat 725 pounds after having done 710 quite comfortably.
The injury is on the mend and as you can see I am doing some light squats trying to get things back together in time for next weekend.”
Moses, the reigning Regional Open Champion will be competing once again in the 75kg division.
Richard Mark Seymour who will campaign in the 110kg class and also the National Open champion, hails from the County of Essequibo and ever since his first competition at the Novices level has not looked back.
He is aiming to carry forward his success at the National Level to the Caribbean and Regional competition.
All the athletes are appealing to the public to come out and support them during the competition which will take place on next Friday and Saturday at the Princess Hotel.
Tickets are already on sale at $500 per day and can be obtained from any Executive member of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation, Basic Beauty on North Road, Kingsrow Barbell Club and Buddies Gym. Other outlets will be added to the list shortly.
