Dear Editor,
I refer to the Peeping Tom article captioned “This is Craziness!” published in Kaieteur News of March 12, 2010 and provide the following for edification of the author and information to the readers of said article.
The piece of land referred to in the article is currently red sand/loam with some amount of vegetation on it.
The Ministry of Agriculture intends to surface the area which will in actual fact improve the aesthetics of the area.
Thereafter, on selected days and specific times during a given week, farmers will be allowed to wholesale their farm produce to vendors, exporters and other business persons. The presence of a farmers’ market near the Princess Hotel and the National Stadium will actually enhance these two showpieces.
No stalls or any other structure will be constructed on this tarmac. Adequate garbage facilities will be available for disposal of waste immediately after its use on each market day. The tarmac will also be available for use as a car park whenever the need arises.
It must be noted, that the world over, such activities occur; farmers are given the opportunity to wholesale their products in open market areas.
Finally, I wish to let you know that many farmers have met with Minister Persaud complaining of limited time they are given to do wholesaling activities in Georgetown and of being robbed by bandits at some city markets. Additionally, the operations of this farmers’ market will also assist the many buyers of farm produce, many of them having complained of lack of easy and convenient access to purchase farmers’ produce in wholesale quantities in the city.
The tarmac at Providence will be well lit and secured. Guyana Marketing Corporation will manage its operations to ensure that this facility is used for its intended purpose.
