– Ravens blow-out Eagles
By Edison Jefford
Bounty Colts had let off teams before, but Thursday night had to be one of their memorable flops as the usually aggressive team easily loosed their lasso around number one ranked Courts Pacesetters to initiate a great escape.
Pacesetters untied their suppressed offence in the final five minutes of the feature game in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Division III and Open Leagues to win 78-75 after Colts stumbled down the homestretch.
Royston Siland and Stephon Gillis scored 15 points each as Naylon Loncke added 13 and Kurt Elias 12 points for Courts, who made a Herculean effort to keep them on course of retaining the number one position in the Garden City.
A loss would have seriously dented that chance. Gavin Beeram scored 20 points and Neiko Fraser had 18 points to lead Colts’ offence. Triston Lake, who swung the game in Colts’ favour with two big three-pointers, finished with 12 points.
Colts always showed dangerous signs in the game, taking a 27-23 lead after Vivian Alder threw down a huge one-handed dunk from the bottom of the paint. Alder’s spin move and dunk electrified fans and gave his team some momentum.
However, Colts’ thrust was short-lived as Pacesetters went on an 11-0 run that a clinical no-look pass from Travis Burnett, cutting baseline to Elias for a front rim finger-roll had highlighted. A huge three-point jumper from Gillis and a finish from Clement Brusche in the paint gave Courts a 34-27 points’ lead as Colts’ defence broke down.
But the twists and turns continued after a series of turnovers from Pacesetters allowed an obviously exhausted Colts’ offence back on stream. Alder completed yet another dunk: a two handed slam to haul his team to within two points.
Loncke nailed a big three-pointer to end the first half with his team up 39-38. Colts then went on another offensive tirade after the break when Lake landed two big threes to turn the game in Colts’ favour in the final half of the encounter.
Lake’s back-to-back jumpers gave his team a 48-44 points advantage, which they held on to through 15 minutes of the 20 minute last half (with 10 minutes allotted per quarter) and even extended the lead to 62-52 with six minutes left.
In three minutes, Colts gave up a game they should have won comfortably. Colts were in the lead 67-57 when Hugh Arthur penetrated the paint for a fade-away jumper that cut an overwhelming lead in the context of local basketball.
Siland then made one of two free-throws before Burnette finished an acrobatic move to further erase Colts’ deficit. Courts had employed a stiff press-defence against Colts down the homestretch that found the tough club wanting.
Siland completed an ‘And-One’ play before Loncke downed a big three-pointer to initiate one of the best come-back wins in local basketball recently. With a 1:24 left in the game, Pacesetters took a 72-70 points’ lead, and that was the game.
Pacesetters never looked back as sensitive basketball prevailed with use of the clock and timeouts effectively giving the club the win. Pacesetters’ next assignment will be number two ranked, Ravens in the feature game tomorrow night.
In the preceding games Thursday night, Ravens blew away Eagles 103-49 in a Division III encounter and Maccabees beat Eagles 68-50 in the other Open game.
Tyrone Hamid dropped a massive 33 points for Ravens with Marlon Hyanes and Courtney Hinds putting up 15 points each in support. Nazil Mohammed and Eon Tappin had 12 points each for Eagles third ‘D’ squad.
For Maccabees, Hodayah Stewart scored 25 points while Darren Thomas added 21 points in the win. Troy Ferdinand had 10 points for Eagles. The tournament continues tomorrow night with perhaps the best games of the Leagues.
