-Pepsi Sonics believe
On February 20, the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) issued a press release in which it was stated that the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club has been barred from the GABA Division I and III Leagues.
The Executives of the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club is both disappointed and appalled at GABA President (Trevor Rose) and his association, and considers it (the decision to bar the club) a flagrant breach of (GABA and basketball) rules.
Naturally, we reject the allegations and presentation made by the President and call upon him hereafter to conduct affairs through the proper channel. We do not anticipate that our readers would wish us to enter into a public slug fest.
We do not want a “trial by press” either, and we will not be doing that. It is our intention, therefore, to pursue matters via the proper channels as set out by the constitution, and let the situation follow due procedure and process.
The Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club feel that the Guyanese people at all times, are entitled to respect and mature conduct from those who serve them. We therefore call on the GABA President and the association to do likewise.
The Executives of Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club is negotiating to pay the fine. We are not responsible for the cost of rental of the Sports Hall. We did give them (GABA) notice of not participating in the League. There were games that night.
The association met with some of the players whom (understandably) just wanted to play basketball, whom are not in the capacity to make decisions on behalf of the club. The GABA is not exactly impeccable.
Yours in Sports,
Merle Chalmers,
President of Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club
Editor’s Note: The GABA had banned the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club from its Leagues after the club pulled out ad hoc. The GABA then stated that they incurred rental monies for the Sports Hall the night the club decided to pull out. Pepsi Sonics was subsequently fined the rental money the GABA said it incurred. Subsequently, the club had expressed an intention to return to the competition with Coach Mark Agard stating that his players want to play basketball. However, the negotiations on the club’s return have been greeted with several unfortunate twists and turns that this newspaper has covered extensively.
Chalmers’ letter was in response to the latest development on the matter, which is a frustration at the GABA over the club’s handling of the matter: the association stated in a news item Wednesday that the club says one thing in meetings and then put the opposite in writing. Chalmers is currently based overseas.
