Field athletes finally given prominence
Linden’s Parish Cadogan and Winston Caesar completed the list of eight athletes that will represent Guyana at the prestigious CARIFTA Games scheduled for April 3-5 at Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town, Cayman Islands.
Cadogan, a national schools’ high jump record holder and Caesar, also a record holder in the triple jump event, were named among the track athletes earlier this week to compete at the event when the local athletics association met.
Kaieteur Sport identified six track athletes in Tiffany Carto, Jenella Jonas, Jevina Straker, Chavez Ageday, Curtis Fraser and Kevin Bayley following the CARIFTA Games trials at the Police Sports Club Ground last Sunday. Those athletes had basically selected themselves after turning in performances that were right on par with their regional counterparts in terms of required standards. At the time of their identification here, their selection was not official.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) still has not officially released the team, but from informed officials, Kaieteur Sport understands that the six athletes were named with Cadogan and Caesar making up the eight athletes.
AAG President, Colin Boyce had told this newspaper yesterday that eight athletes along with two officials were being looked at for the Junior CARIFTA Games. He could not be reached yesterday for comment on the team.
However, Cadogan will compete in the U-17 Triple and High Jump events with Caesar in Long and Triple Jump U-20 events respectively, breaking an established tradition, which only sought to expose track athletes in this Millennium.
Both athletes from the Mining Town have literally dominated those events in various age groups for years without the requisite reward and recognition. Their patience, however, is on the verge of being justly rewarded internationally.
Carto, Fraser and Ageday won double sprint events in times that have placed them on the team at the Games’ trials. Carto won the Under-17 Girls 100m and 200m. She was named to compete in both events at the CARIFTA Games.
Fraser is to compete in the Under-17 Boys’ 100m and 200m while Ageday will do justice in the Under-20 Boys’ category. Both athletes won the two categories emphatically at the trials with Ageday running a personal best 10.5 in the 100m.
Last year’s CARIFTA Games gold medallist and Junior Sportswoman of the Year, Jevina Straker was the Under-17 Girls 1500m nominee. She will also compete in the 800m but is gearing for a title defence in the 1500m race.
Her counter-part, Jenella Jonas, who won a bronze medal at the Games last year, was also named for the 800m and 1500m events, but in the Under-20 category. Jonas had won her CARIFTA bronze at the Under-17 level.
Kevin Bayley was the other track athlete identified, being named for the Under-20 Boys’ 800m and 1500m events. Guyana is yet to get on the podium in the sprint events, but the diversity of this team increases a wide range of possibilities.
