A number of the country’s leaders and civil servants and members of the diplomatic community gathered Monday night in honour of the International Day for Women reception hosted by the Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand.
Many of the dignitaries had messages for the women of the country and the world, both personal wishes and messages issued on the behalf of one group or another.
The event was well attended, and at the end of the proceedings Minister Manickchand took the time to make a statement for all the women of our country. She said,
“We are joining in celebrating today as a day of visible achievements, tangible achievements; especially in getting equal rights and opportunities for women around the world. From where we were 100 years ago there have been changes and achievements but no real equality as yet.
“There is still a lot of work to be done for real equality across class, race, religion and political inclinations. Guyana can be proud of our achievements in the area but we are still struggling with the historical position in which women have been placed: that women are inferior to men. There needs to be a redoubling of efforts across partisan lines if we are going to finish the job and bring true equality to women.”
Mrs. Sheila Holder, MP and member of Alliance For Change as well as Mr. Donald Ramotar, General Secretary to the PPP/C also took the opportunity to speak out as well, giving statements of their own.
“We need to recognize the value of women’s work, many women do what they do and never recognize the contribution that they make to society. Women play a crucial role in all our lives.” Mrs Holder said that she hoped that the electorate would recognize that fact and place a greater emphasis on electing more women.
She issued a very strong call to women in politics to craft an independent voice and path for themselves and to serve as positive role models for all women.
Mr. Ramotar said that women in Guyana have achieved much over the 100-year history of International Women’s Day and that they should count their blessings. “However they must continue to struggle for general equality on the part of women everywhere.”
He noted that the recent increase in incidences of domestic violence is unacceptable and liberated men and women should be fighting this situation.
“We should also spare a thought for those women suffering in war torn countries, places like Iraq, Darfur, Afghanistan, The Congo, Palestine – women who are bearing tremendous burdens as a result of the actions of others. Spare a thought for these women and give them solidarity in their time of need.”
