Dear Editor,
Local Government elections are in the air, and political parties will be seeking the support of residents to control the local government in the communities.
It is a pity that we could not have a better system other than political parties to elect our representatives for NDC especially in communities like Kwakwani.
Any resident desirous of becoming a councilor on NDCs should be required to publicly declare their interest and place their leadership and other qualities on the line to be scrutinised.
The Kwakwani community is in desperate need of selfless leaders who are capable of indentifying opportunities in crisis situations and be able to utilize the available resources (financial or material) to the maximum benefit of the entire community.
Clear cases of the leaders not utilizing available resources for the benefit of the entire community over the past couple years are as followed:
*The Bauxite Company (BCGI) giving to the Kwakwani community $100,000 per month (for over four years) to assist with development and 25 gallons of fuel to aid garbage collection. Residents are still to be told how much money was collected over that period and to see the developmental work that was done.
The financial contribution was stopped by the company (as was expected) but other forms of assistance are still available.
The company is not giving money so the “leaders” are not interested in finding ways to get them to fulfill its social responsibilities to communities in which it operates. No meetings to discuss community development.
*The forestry association in the community is mandated to give the community a minimum of $35,000 per month for community development. The amount owed is over $1 million – and no word on if it will ever be made available.
Natural resources in the community are exploited by lots of people foreign to the community and in some cases even damaging our roads, but our leaders are unable to make the kind of representation for these persons to make meaningful contributions towards the community development.
*assistance to the community in the form of government subvention in 2009, a part was used for road repairs using equipment (most owned by persons from out of the community). This type of road work was done by residents a few years ago and it was a better job. It was expected that more locals would have been involved in executing projects making jobs available in the community, but as the saying goes “ money go weh money deh” so the “hog of the money” gone to the equipment owners and the potholes remain.
It is absolutely necessary for the residents of Kwakwani to take back their community from the hands of those selfish persons parading as leaders. Forget about party politics and elect persons who are committed to their community’s development. Let us revitalize the spirit we had when we were able to build the Kwakwani-ituni road, teachers’ hostel and our secondary school.
There exist in every political party operating in the community, village fathers and mothers capable of initiating activities using the available resources for collective benefit.
