Club undecided, sending mixed signals
By Edison Jefford
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) is at its wits end with how the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club has been responding to negotiations among the two factions over their various documented and disparate discrepancies.
It appeared as though there would have been some agreement over the club’s return to the GABA Leagues after it boycotted the opening last month, but new developments from an inside source pointed to yet another stalemate brewing.
The issue stemmed from the complaint that the club had lodged accusing the Georgetown sub-association of failing to respond to its infraction and grievance with FIBA-accredited referee, Aubrey Younge, in a matter that seemed personal.
The club also noted the improper manner of their League invitation as a further source of their decision to not compete in the event. Subsequent to their boycott, their Coach, Mark Agard had expressed his willingness to return and compete.
Thus the two factions entered into negotiations and the word before yesterday’s exposure was that Pepsi Sonics were asked to put their request in writing. However that took a new turn when Kaieteur Sport was updated on the matter.
“We had met and it seemed as though we had resolved their concerns. Now I believe it is just politics because what we asked for we did not get in the letter. The letter was not one that suggests a request,” GABA President, Trevor Rose said.
“I gave them an ultimatum to have a letter in my office on returning to the competition. It was all I asked after we talked and talked and settled on resolutions, but now it is like we didn’t meet with them and resolve anything,” he continued.
Rose informed that he shared the view of Agard, which centres on the belief that boycotts of this nature usually affect the players more than the administrators. He said that he went at lengths to have them back because of the players.
“We definitely wanted them in the tournament. I don’t want to deprive the players from a competition that could help them develop. We don’t see what the problem is after we had met and solved them. It’s just politics Edison,” Rose reiterated.
The GABA head made it clear that all the intentions of the Executive for basketball are in good stead. He said that they do not want anything negative to impede the growth and the development of the sport in the renowned Garden City.
