A 15-year old boy perished yesterday when the wall of a 60-foot deep mining pit he was working in near at Tumatumari caved in pinning him under tons of gravel.
Michael Ricardo Prince, of Maikobe Village in the Potaro area, was pronounced dead around 11:30 hours, almost an hour after he was pulled out from under the rubble.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Prince was operating a jet hose when the wall came crashing down before he could get out of the way. Kaieteur News understands that the teenager’s father had taken him to work with the land dredging operation.
The father and the owner of the operation are in police custody assisting with investigations.
Officials from the Ministry of Labour at Madhia are reportedly looking into the matter, since the dead teen is below the legal age of employment.
Yesterday’s incident is reminiscent of last week’s tragedy in which two miners were killed when they were pinned under the crumbled wall of a 70-foot deep mining pit at White Hole.
It also brings into question the safety of land dredging mining practices and the mechanisms to monitor such operations.
