In an effort to save almost 8000 acres of rice, the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary/Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) have started utilising a recently dug canal to carry much needed water from 27 miles up the Mahaica River to the drought hit crops and livestock serviced by the Perth Biaboo Canal in Mahaica.
The new canal which connects to the Mahaica River at a point called Kuliserabo is, according to Mr. A. Charles, acting Manager of the MMA/ADA, an emergency measure, implemented without all of the usual finishing touches such a project would require.
As a result, the embankments have not yet been reinforced.
This when combined with the soil composition in the area (soft, spongy, pegasse) makes for a very soft dam along the length of the canal. The dam is the access route for the men and machinery involved in the project.
Residents of the outlying areas however have taken advantage of the opportunity to fish and hunt in the vicinity. They are also utilising the dam as a means of travelling in and out of the area. This additional traffic has led to some degradation of the embankment and in a move to ensure that the effort of digging the canal does not go to waste, the MMA/ADA has issued several notices to the effect that residents of the area do not enter the area for the time being until the two authorities can complete the works on the canal.
According to Mr. Charles, the first fifteen miles are not a problem, but anyone entering the last 12 miles of the area between the Perth Biaboo Main Canal and the Mahaica River will be in violation of the warning and if caught may be duly prosecuted.
