Jessica Stephenson, one of the two swimmers selected by the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association for the CARIFTA Games set for the Cayman Islands has achieved Personal Best (PB) times in the 50m and 200m breast stroke at the ASATT Open Long Course Invitational Meet in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.
Representing Marlins Swim Club, Stephenson, competing in the 13-14 age group won the first battle in the 200m breast over Rejan Chin two years her senior (15-17). The Meet was and Open competition, which saw swimmers of all ages swimming together.
Stephenson beat her Personal Best (PB) in the 200 breast by 5 seconds, her new PB is now 2:48.52 (previous time 2:53.95). In the 50m breast she bettered her PB by almost a second recording a 35.55 (having entered with 36.21).
Stephenson was also the only 13-14 female swimmer to make to finals of the 200m free where she finished a commendable 7th with a new PB, 2 seconds faster of 2:26.84 in a difficult race behind the Colombian and Trinidadian who were both 15 and over athletes.
Meanwhile, Jorge Murrillo of Colombia produced the fastest ever swim on T & T soil in the 200m breaststroke on Day Two of the Three day Meet.
Murrillo produced a blistering 2:26.18, just going under the open national record of Paul Newallo in 1987 of 2:26.33.
Murrillo was followed by Miko Cruz of UTT (2:36.72) and the bronze went to Jason Rodriguez of Marlins in 2:37.62.
The other Guyanese swimmer selected on the CARIFTA team is Ronaldo Rodrigues.
