A team of overseas-based medical Doctors yesterday attended to scores of Linden residents who gathered at the One Mile and Christianburg Health Centres for medical attention. The doctors’ visit represented the commencement of a two-day medical outreach programme in the mining town.
The team, which calls itself, ‘Health and educational relief for Guyana’ was formed when a group of doctors from Florida visited Guyana in December 2000.
Today the team maintains its twice yearly visits to the country with a mission to aid institutions and provide health care to its citizens.
Team Member Wayne Sampson, who is a Lindener, spoke on behalf of the group.
He said that more than 200 residents drawn from the Christianburg and One Mile areas were able to access the medical services. Today the medical outreach will continue at the Amelia’s Ward and Ituni Health Centres.
Among the group of overseas doctors are Guyanese Colly Oudkirk, Michelle Wand, Cindy Herd, Joseph Lindner and Wayne Sampson.
According to the group, Funds for medications and supplies are raised exclusively in the state of Florida.
It was reported that for the team’s next visit in August, Orthopaedic Physicians will join the delegation to treat children with congenital orthopaedic deformities.
Sampson expressed appreciation on behalf of the medical team, to the local authorities who assisted in organising the outreaches.
