A male pedal cyclist of Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital after he was struck by a motor car.
Reports are that the victim, who has since been identified as 42-year-old Linden Richards, died just after 01:00 h yesterday.
This newspaper was told that Richards was riding his bicycle on the Pouderoyen Public Road when he was struck from behind by the car which was reportedly speeding.
A relative of the dead man told this newspaper that Richards was last seen around 23:00 hours on Sunday.
The relative who asked not to be named said a man who works at the West Demerara Regional Hospital visited their home and related that Richards was killed in an accident. The relative said when they went to the hospital Richards was at the time listed as unidentified.
“The minute we saw the body we knew it was him…so right away we contacted his family in the United States.”
The relative said that they learnt that the driver of the car who took Richards to the hospital was the same person who struck him down.
This newspaper was told that the driver at the time of the incident might have been under the influence of alcohol. He is also a former policeman.
He was detained, but it is not clear if he was still in custody up to press time yesterday.
