NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Last week the Region Six National Events Committee hosted a presentation ceremony for those who emerged victorious in the various competitions held in observance of Guyana’s 40th anniversary as a Republic.
Chairman of the Committee, Faizal Jaffarally, described all the events held as successful. He indicated that each activity saw larger numbers of persons participating than previous years. Jaffarally cited the hoisting of the Golden Arrow Head on February 22nd and the Costume and Float Parade held on February 28th as attracting the largest turnouts.
East Berbice/Corentyne expended $500,000 on the entire Mashramani package this year. Among events held were the Children’s Costume Competition, Children’s Costume Parade and a donation to the oldest resident in Region Six. The Region Six Children’s Costume Parade made quite a comeback after being absent for several years.
The annual tribute to the late Presidents Cheddi and Janet Jagan, which was held yesterday at Babu John in Port Mourant, was also listed as one of the activities to mark Guyana’s 40th Republic Anniversary, but Jafarally said this is funded solely by the People’s Progressive Party.
According to Mr. Jaffarally, each year the Region receives a budgetary allocation and this amount is said to be invested in national events, including Independence, Emancipation, Arrival Day, Remembrance Day and the like. The sum is usually divided in accordance with the size of the planned activity.
He said, should the Private Sector get on board and assist in financing some of the events, then the celebrations across the Region could be on a larger scale.
According to him, over the past five years, none of the business entities in East Berbice/Corentyne had offered any form of contribution.
The distribution of prizes was held at the Boardroom of the Region Six Democratic Council in Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam. The People’s Progressive Party was handed the first prize in the large float category. Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Company won the Best Decorated Building competition, leaving Dave’s Television Station (Channel Eight) in the second spot.
In the small float category, the Home Designs and Engineering’s production of ‘Why Rent when you can Buy’, which was financed by the Republic Bank, won the trophy. The Brick Layers came in second with their creative float and costume design, which focused on stamping out some of the main social ills.
Number Forty-eight Primary School on the Corentyne trounced their competitors and walked away with the trophy and $30,000 for the Spelling Bee Competition. The $10,000 prize for the Best Speller went to a student of that institution. The second Prize – $20,000 was reportedly won by the Cropper Primary School at Albion but they were not represented at the function.
Meanwhile, Jafarally said plans have already commenced for Guyana’s 44th Independence observance. Some of the events on the drawing board so far include more community based activities in the line of sports, culture, and education along with the traditional Flag Raising Ceremony.
