The executives of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) have identified eight players to represent this country at the Tri-Nation Scrabble tournament scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago from April 2-4 next.
National champion, Abigail McDonald would lead the squad which also includes Moen Gafoor, Ewart Adams, Fred Collins, James Krakowsky, Ulric Harris, Leon Belony and Floyd Carmichael. The players are scheduled to leave Guyana on March 30th next.
Trinidad and Tobago, led by their representative at the last world championships, Leslie Charles, is the defending champion but the local word formers would fancy their chances this time around.
President of GASP, Moen Gafoor, intimated that local word formers are well prepared for this tournament and are very confident of procuring top accolades. He said that the other two competing countries, Barbados and Trinidad have strong players but Guyanese players are much more improved since the last outing in Barbados.
Furthermore, local scrabble queen, McDonald would be looking to capitalize on her victory over Trinidadian Charles in the last world championships.
Local players are now engaged in earnest practice sessions at the Oasis club, Carmichael Street, Georgetown from Monday to Wednesday. They then congregate for another practice session at Malteenoes Sports Club on Thursdays. The funds for the traveling and other prerequisites were garnered from several fund raising activities.
