An eight-year old girl was forced to travel to neighbouring Brazil to save two of her fingers which were almost severed by a closing door at her school in the Rupununi on Friday.
Mickaila Malcolm was standing at the door with her fingers between the crack when another student slammed the door shut.
The little girl’s screams were heard but by the time her fingers were freed they had already suffered extensive damage.
At the time of the incident the children were unsupervised as the teacher was attending to another problem that had presented itself.
The injured student was taken to the Lethem Hospital but could not be operated on because of a non functioning operating theatre.
Arrangements were then made to have her transported to Boa Vista where she will receive professional help.
