– Manickchand
As part of efforts to improve on the services offered at the Palms Geriatric facility, the administrators of the facility and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, requested a Value For Money Audit covering the period January to December 2008.
According to Minister Priya Manikchand, they welcomed the audit report. There were a number of issues that the Ministry made early steps to have rectified as quickly as possible.
For almost a month now the Palms has had a new Director of Social Services, Mr. Wentworth Tanner, as well as a new Administrator, Mr. G. Singh, both of whom have been working with the Minister to bring about the changes necessary to ensure that the residents of the facility receive the kind of care and living environment that they deserve.
She stated that by the time the official audit was actually published the management and administration of the Palms had already made some headway in addressing a few of the challenges faced by the staff and residents of the facility.
Some of the key issues that the Ministry addressed were the provision of meals and nightcaps of a higher quality and on a timely basis, hygiene issues and even resident activities, where fieldtrips to the museums and botanical gardens were organised to give the members of the home a break from their daily routines.
A recreational centre that will contain a television and exercise facilities and equipment is also being constructed to the East of the Palms Building for use by the residents.
The Minister noted that the changes are a work in progress but will continue, especially under the two new staff members overseeing the facility who are well aware of what the Ministry expects to be done in their delivery of care to the residents of the facility.
