At long last the Traffic Department at the Lethem Police Station has acquired a motorcycle.
And as if to prove that they deserved it, in less than a half day they had instituted 10 charges for traffic violations.
The motorcycle was delivered to the district last week and was immediately put into operation.
This stems from a request made during a previous police outreach meeting with members of the community, which was presided over by Divisional Commander David Ramnarine.
The Lethem traffic department was previously using a pick-up vehicle which was described as inconvenient to carry out traffic duties.
“If they see something and they have to turn back, by the time they do so the perpetrators often get away,” a resident said, while commending the initiative.
He indicated that he has been residing at Lethem for the past 40 years and it is the first time that he has seen an official traffic patrol motorcycle there.
With the increase in traffic that is expected following the opening of the Takutu Bridge linking Guyana and Brazil, the need for effective traffic control cannot be overlooked.
