On the crest of qualifying for the next stage of the CFU World Cup qualifying preliminary phase, Guyana’s ‘Lady Jaguars’ head into today’s encounter against St. Vincent & the Grenadines brimming with confidence after their easy 2-0 win over Suriname on Friday.
The Lady Jags will be looking to win the group and cement their place for the next round of qualification for next year’s FIFA World Cup scheduled to be staged in Germany.
The Guyanese completely dominated their Surinamese counterparts and should have added more goals to the eventual score-line with the numerous chances that were created.
They took the physical Dutch side completely by surprise as they matched them bodily and were far more superior in passing the ball and keeping possession in a display that would have certainly pleased the coaching staff. Goal-scorers Brittany Persaud and Alison Heydorn proved to be a thorn in the flesh of their opponents and containing them would not be that easy.
Persaud was an ever lurking presence in the Dutch defence, while Heydorn, who many felt netted the goal of the match showed silky skills and has the hallmark of a match-winner.
Guyana’s defence seems to be the toughest to penetrate in the group and should they replicate the last performance, it would be interesting to see what strategy the Vincentians will employ to give themselves a chance of infiltrating the rock solid wall.
The tough minded Collette Hope had a solid game at left back and she admirably supported the cast of Briana De Souza, Justine Rodrigues and Donna Carvalhal, while the frisky Nikkita Persaud showed brilliant skills and pace that will certainly worry the opposing defenders.
Ashlee Savona, who came on as a substitute is also one with admirable speed and skill as well as Ashley Rodrigues, Heydorn and Persaud.
With the local support expected to once again be partisan, it is difficult to see how the Vincentians could extricate themselves from such a complex situation, given the fact that they’ve already lost their first encounter against the Surinamese.
They, however, should not be underestimated since they should have won against the Dutch if the opportunities that were provided were taken.
The strikers have showed that they too are quick and possess good skills as well, but it is the defence which looked suspect whenever the Surinamese attacked and that area for sure will have to improve to thwart an anticipated rampaging Guyana strike line.
The odds are surely stacked against the visitors who have their work cut out to register a win.
All in all Guyana is favoured to move on to the next phase, barring a major upset.
Fans are being asked to come out in their numbers to rally behind the ‘Lady Jaguars’ as they seek to do Guyana proud.
Starting time is 15:00 hrs and the venue is the GCC ground.
Price of admission is $500, while children Under-12 is free.
