GPSU pays tribute on International women’s day

The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation on International Women’s Day yesterday.
The theme was “Rights at Work-Ending Poverty and Inequality.”
A release from the General and Executive Councils of the Guyana Public Service Union, said that on International Women’s Day, “our nation’s women and those worldwide are pivotal to the endurance of international movements that preserve justice and equality.”
The theme highlights the imbalance of opportunities that women endure, but implies that times have called for explicit captioning to publicise challenges facing women that would otherwise be ignored without outspoken opposition.
According to the statement equality implies partnership not replacement. In the quest for equality many women only aspire to participate meaningfully and encouragingly in the advancement of society.
If one considers a few of the many roles that our nation’s women play including mother, caregiver, homemaker, breadwinner, citizen, public servant, health care provider, and teacher, then it is evident that women are essential to the development of Guyana.
It was stated worldwide and here in Guyana, the plight of women underlies larger issues of crime, injustice, domestic violence and poverty.
Many fail to realise that several, if not the majority of victims, are female who oftentimes suffer the most because of their gender aside from other bafflers they face such as race, religion or political views.
This imbalance is even more pronounced considering that women contribute more than their fair share to the functioning of the Guyanese economy, but are denied fair and equal access, the resulting benefits.
The statement noted that many women have made significant contributions in the past century toward improving their quality of life; however, many more barriers need to be overcome.
According to president of GPSU, Patrick Yarde, the Union has aspired to create an environment that naturally encourages women to see themselves as equals and feel empowered to fully play their part, but those successes would not be realised were it not for their desire to be involved, greater change and growth can only come with increased involvement and vigilance, as such, all women are called to lead in this effort.
