A man who spent six months in prison for assaulting his wife of 23 years, is on the run again. This time he severely chopped the woman about her body on Friday morning as she walked to work.
The woman, Roxanne Goodman, 41, had ended the relationship some 14 months ago, but had still received threats from her estranged husband.
As the woman lay in her hospital bed yesterday, she recounted various instances of abuse at the hands of her husband.
The woman said that as she walked to work on Friday morning, around 9:30hrs, her husband choked her from behind and said he was going to kill her.
“He come from behind me and seh he gon kill me and after that he started to chop me.”
Goodman said that her husband chopped her first to the head, that wound carried 30 stitches inside and out. The man continued to chop her even though she cried for him to stop.
She said that she placed her hands in front of her face to prevent him from chopping her to the face, she almost lost her hand.
The woman presently has a gaping wound to the hand which carried well over 15 stitches.
Thinking that chopping her was not enough, the man whipped out a long blade knife and tried to stab her. None of the wounds penetrated because the woman blocked the knife with her handbag.
Eventually, the man only stopped attacking her after an eyewitness hurled a hammer at him.
Goodman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was taken to the theater.
At this point, Goodman’s daughter, Roxanne Smith, interjected and gave her account of the abuse she faced while she lived with her father.
According to the daughter, her father starved her on numerous occasions when she tried to intervene whenever he was beating her mother. She also said that the father would starve her brothers and sisters whenever he drank alcohol.
“Whenever I would get into the fight he would beat and starve me,” the daughter recounted.
She remembered, also, her father throwing her to the floor when she questioned him about his behaviour towards her mother.
On another occasion, the daughter who is expected to give birth to her first child, said that she remembers her father beating her mother with a bicycle chain, and leaving her with a broken arm. The woman had to seek refuge in neighbouring Suriname for a few weeks.
The daughter further said that the family made numerous reports at various police stations; however, the father always managed to evade the law enforcers.
She also said that the family was forced to leave their home at Diamond because of the father’s abuse.
“We had to leave the house that mommy spent her life savings to build just because we wanted to be at peace.”
One of Goodman sisters who was present at the hospital yesterday said that the alleged attacker has made phone calls telling the woman that he would kill her if it’s the last thing he does.
“He calls her repeatedly telling her that he is going to finish what he started,” the sister said.
The family has now taken precautionary security measures at the hospital.
Up to press time, the police were yet to come and take a statement from the injured woman.
