Coach of the ‘Lady Jags,’ the local women’s football squad, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover, is confident that his squad would defeat St Vincent and the Grenadines when the two teams face off in the Caribbean Football Union World Cup Qualification tournament at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground this afternoon.
Dover was loud in praise of the team’s performance in their inaugural match of the competition against Suriname. It is based on this performance that Dover is making his prediction.
The former National and Alpha United FC coach who is currently attached to the Trinidad and Tobago professional football team, Docs Khewalas, said that despite a few tactical blunders the local players had performed admirably in the match against Suriname. He credited them for their ability to stick to the game plan even under challenging situations.
Dover said that after studying the Surinamese the tacticians realized that the foreign team played a tight game and were bundled closer to the midfield position rather than utilizing the wings. He said that such ploys acted to their advantage because he had instructed the ‘Lady Jags’ to utilize the wings while penetrating the midfield position. Dover said that the local squad was by far the fitter of the two teams so he was not worried as the game dwindled to the end.
The former national male team coach admitted that the locals had missed a lot of opportunities in the Suriname game but said that this area would be the focus of attention leading up to today’s game. “We are going for an outright win against St Vincent today since we wish to drive home our superiority,” said Dover.
He singled out the performances of Ronnette Cort (goalkeeper) and Collette Hope (full back) for high commendation even as he lauded the team spirit and cohesion. The teams are battling for a place in the Women’s World cup tournament scheduled for Germany in 2011 and Dover feels that with the right application the ‘Lady Jags’ could go on to procure major accolades in the tournament.
