-son sustains burns trying to save dad
Despite valiant efforts by his son, a Stewartville, West Coast Demerara pensioner perished just before 15:00 hrs yesterday in a mystery fire that destroyed the family’s three-bedroom home.
Gool Mohamed, 81, of Lot 54 Middle Street Stewartville, was trapped in the upper flat where the fire reportedly started.
His son, Abdul Mohamed, tried to drag his father out but was forced to abandon his efforts to save his own life. The younger Mohamed sustained burns to the feet hands and back, while his father’s body was burnt beyond recognition.
The family had a concrete and wooden two-storey building, and the victims said they were unable to save anything. They estimated their losses at some $3M.
Grimacing in pain, a distraught Abdul Mohamed recalled that he was in the yard when he heard one of his female relatives scream out that the building was on fire.
He said that he ran upstairs and observed flames coming from the middle bedroom. Mr. Mohamed stated that he hoisted his father and tried to take him from the burning building, but was badly scorched by the quickly spreading flames.
The son said that the intense heat caused him to drop his father and flee as the fire quickly engulfed the building, which the family had occupied from some 40 years.
A neighbour said that firefighters from the Leonora Fire Station arrived promptly but were unable to save the building.
Kaieteur News observed members of the fire service briefly examining a kerosene stove among the debris.
However, Abdul Mohamed and the other occupants said that they were at a loss how the fire started.
They explained that there was a power outage in the area when the fire occurred and no one was cooking at the time.
At least six major fires have occurred for the year claiming the lives of two people.
