A 68 year-old Lindener is fearful for her life. She claims that her mentally ill grandson who attacked her several times in the past has been left to roam the streets.
The woman, Esther Ward, told this newspaper that her grandson, 26-year-old Eon Thomas, has in the past attacked her, once chopping her about the body. She said the matters have all attracted the attention of the courts.
Thomas was remanded and she was eventually forced to drop the matter after being pressured by other relatives.
“I became the worst thing in the family the last time the matter went to court. But for no reason he would always attack me; he would even attack strangers, and the last incident was on February 5,” Ward recalled.
The woman said that her grandson who lives not far from her Wismar Housing Scheme home came to her home and upon entering with a piece wood, began beating her.
The woman said that after giving her a sound trashing her grandson fled the home and she managed to seek help in getting to the hospital.
The woman said that once she felt good enough she went to the Police station where she made a report of the incident.
Ward said initially when she went to make the report a police rank told her that they were out of paper so he could not take her statement.
Subsequently, the report was made and Ward said she was able to give a statement.
The woman added that her grandson was charged and the matter is currently before the Wismar Magistrate’s Court.
At the first hearing, Ward said her grandson was remanded. The matter was called again on Tuesday last and is expected to be called again in April.
However, on Thursday, the woman said she was informed by a senior police rank from the Wismar Police Station that the prison officials had refused to take her grandson at the facility.
The woman said that from all that she has been told her grandson may have been released and now she is fearful that he might once again attack her and this time it might be fatal.
She is now calling on the relevant authorities to look into the matter not only in her case but since there are dozens of other mentally ill persons roaming free.
“The government needs some sort of institution for persons like this. It is dangerous because when they are in prison and can hurt people. They need somewhere separate for these persons,” Ward lamented.
