Guyana’s flagship Female national team watched by His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo, Patron of Women’s Football Dr. Jennifer Westford and President of the Guyana Football Federation Colin Klass, inflicted a 2-0 whipping on old nemesis Suriname to ease into the top position of the 3-way battle as Caribbean Football Union World Cup Qualification continued at the GCC ground yesterday afternoon.
The ‘Lady Jags’ put on a competent display of football either side of play to win the eagerly anticipated encounter with ease. Brittany Persaud in the 11th minute and Alison Heydorn 2 minutes into the second half sealed a comfortable and important win for the Guyanese lasses.
Urged on by an appreciative and vociferous crowd, the Guyanese controlled the ball for the most part and overcame a few exciting moments to overturn the Surinamese who after their close 1-0 win over St. Vincent & the Grenadines had said they were confident of beating the Ladies from the Land of Many Waters.
But what is for sure, they were well aware of the quality of the locals and knew that talk was cheap as they had to produce the goods on the field of play.
The game commenced after the teams were met by the same officials mentioned in the first paragraph with the Guyanese taking the attack to the visitors.
Deft touches, ball possession and a very offensive minded style of play were the hallmarks of the ‘Lady Jags’ as the Surinamese tried to stem the constant occupation of their midfield and attacking third by the locals.
Suriname goalkeeper Nathalie Benjamin (airborne) is made to work overtime by a foraging Guyana front line.
Goal number one was just a matter of time based on the dominance of the locals. On a throw in from the Surinamese left side deep in their half, Brittany Persaud, who scored against the very opponents in the Goodwill Series in December, volleyed past goalkeeper Nathalie Benjamin to the left corner to send the crowd into a frenzy, President Jagdeo among other officials not being left out of the celebrations.
The class of the ‘Lady Jags’ as opposed to their opponents who did match the Guyanese at times was evident. Their {locals}exciting style of play was also very pleasing, gaining the attention of the many spectators on hand to cheer them on.
The local ladies were very crafty in midfield, solid in defence and very effective in offence. A few chances went wide of the target by the Guyanese who never relented or allowed their opponents to settle. While the first half did not produce any more goals, the ‘Lady Jags’ never showed any signs of frustration.
On the resumption after the break, the Guyanese wasted no time in picking up where they left off from the
first half. Two minutes into the half, Alison Heydorn collected a pass deep into the Surinamese defensive third saw goalie Benjamin advancing and smartly lobbed the ball over her head to seal goal number two.
While no other goals materialised the Guyanese kept up their offence with most of the play concentrated in the opponent’s area. Substitutions were made by both sides, Suriname making their first one minute before the half when Brigitte Righters made way for Singana Deel.
Suriname made their second change in the 56th minute, Lorraine Dompig exiting for Andaya Landveld. Guyana made its first change in the 60th minute when Captain Ashley Rodrigues made way for Ashlee Savona.
The Guyanese introduced Alyssa Budhoo in the 79th minute for Jordanna Phillips while Donna Carvalhal came in for Alison Heydorn in the 82nd minute.
The Surinamese were reduced to mere spectators as the ‘Lady Jags’ put together multiple chances. They {Suriname}created a few chances of their own but were never any serious threat to the Guyanese who defended stoutly and will now focus on taking care of St. Vincent & The Grenadines in the final game of the group tomorrow afternoon at the same venue kicking off at 15:30hrs. Suriname will leave for home overland.
