– Govt. pays $5000 per stray
The government is moving to increase the fee it offers to those who catch stray animals in hopes that this will encourage more persons to take up the job and get the animals off public roads and bridges.
Animals on roads have been a major cause for concern, since this contributes to accidents.
Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, yesterday said the fee for catching a single stray animal would move from $1,000 to $5,000. But he would have to get Parliamentary approval before the new fees could be effected.
Stray catchers would have to be recruited and “authorised” to do the job. Rohee could not say how many stray catchers the country may need to deal with the problem.
Last year, 117 lost their lives on the country’s roadways. This was four more than the fatalities of 113, in 2008.
Although the figure for 2009 was higher than that of 2008, it represents the second lowest number of fatalities recorded in 41 years by this country, Rohee stated.
In spite of these achievements, he said the Guyana Police Force recognises that more work has to be done to be more effective in the management of traffic.
