Sports and youth development in Berbice has received a major boost on Friday last when the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) in conjunction with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints distributed over $1.5 million worth of sports gear and equipment to various organisations.
The aim is to use sports as an avenue to keep youths off the road and away from drugs and crime. A total of 50 cricket clubs, schools, government agencies, NGO’s and Churches benefited.
Eighteen (18) cricket clubs received $800,000 worth of cricket gear which included balls, batting pads and gloves. Among the clubs were West Berbice, Blairmont, Young Warriors, Port Mourant, Chesney, Police, Bermine, Rose Hall Canje, Edinburgh and Courtland.
Thirty-two (32) churches, NGO’s, Schools and Government Agencies collected $700,000 worth of equipment for several sports including chess, basketball, volleyball, football, draughts, dominoes, table tennis, softball cricket, checkers and circle tennis.
Among those receiving were the Guyana Police Force B Division, Guyana Fire Service, New Amsterdam Catholic and Anglican churches, All Saints Church, NCN Berbice Sports Club, Lower Corentyne Secondary School, JC Chandisingh Secondary, Port Mourant Secondary, Tutorial Academy, Belvedere Primary, Rose Hall Town Primary, CCI Mission and the Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary.
Secretary/CEO of the RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster in delivering the feature address at the handing over ceremony said that the presentation was the third of its kind since 2008 with sponsorship from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and that a total of $3.5 million worth of gear has been shared out during that period.
Foster, who was named the National Male Sports Personality of 2009, noted that the RHTY&SC was the best club in Guyana and as part of its policy, wants every club and youth organisation to follow in its footsteps as they seek to make sure that every youth in Guyana is involved in sports and use it as an alternative to a life than a life on the road.
He stated that the club which would be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year will be hosting over 100 programmes and projects that target sports, education, culture, charity, youth development, community development and religious development for youths.
He challenged the groups and schools to utilise the equipment for its intended purpose and to work overtime to produce sportsmen and women who would not only excel on the field but would be positive role models for all youths in Berbice.
The long standing Secretary said that the time has come for Berbice to produce more outstanding table tennis, basketball, football and chess players to serve as role models while expressing profound gratitude to the leadership and members of the Latter Day Saints Church for sponsoring the programme and for the commitment towards youth development.
He explained that the church which is the RHTY&SC largest sponsor has touched and changed the lives of thousands of youths and expressed the hope that the relationship between the them and the Church would continue to grow.
Elder Tenisingh, a Rosignol based member of the church, stated that they are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of youths, the elderly and the less fortunate. He explained that serving others is part of the church’s teaching and all funds raised for the charity programme was donated by the membership.
Elder Tenisingh, affirmed that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was placed to work along with the RHTYSC as it was not only a role model organisation but one that produces results. He challenged the clubs and schools to use the donated gears properly and to care them.
Mr. D.S Samwaru of the Chesney Cricket Club thanked both the RHTY&SC and the Church for the donation noting that most of the members of clubs are form less fortunate families and were unable to buy cricket equipment.
Senior Master of the lower Corentyne Secondary School Mr. Juran Ally in Berbice also praised the donors for reaching out to the twelve Schools who were assisted.
The RHTYSC over the last fifteen years has donated over $25 million worth of sports and educational materials to youths in Berbice.
